Well... if I do any chaising it will be within a few county area late tonight!   Looks like the best chance... if any ... of diurnal storms would be along the flint hills in easter KS  up into  nw MO.   The initian looks to be after 7pm.  Hopefully something will change this afternoon and the cap will weaken sooner than expected.  Honestly... I don't see that happening.

I am gonna head toward Joplin about 3 or so and probably set up somewhere close to Parsons or Independence after 5pm.   What are your plans? ?

Good luck to those going out, backyard chases like today are nice. Sure 
beats the drive from Texas after a long day of chasing.

As it's been for most chases this year, I'll be sitting this one out. The 
May 4th Crawford County Severe Weather Symposium is this Sunday, still 
working on getting everything done for that and then have to be up at 5AM to 
do an interview about the Symposium for the KOAM Morning Show

Symposium recalls tornadoes

There wasn't a cloud in the sky Sunday. It was very different five years ago on Sunday, May 4, 2003, when a tornado devastated parts of Crawford County. 

The anniversary was marked with a Crawford County Severe Weather Symposium at the Franklin Community Center and Heritage Museum. Joey Ketcham, local storm chaser, arranged a slate of speakers and exhibitors. 

"I had been at KOAM-TV about three months when the May 4 blow-up came," said Doug Heady, chief meteorologist at KOAM-TV. "That was a wild day. I don't work weekends, and I had gone to church that morning, but when I saw the weather reports, I thought that I'd better go in to work. That first storm hit, and then it exploded into full tornadic activity." 

Heady said the TV station has a set plan for severe weather coverage, which includes cut-ins - breaking into regularly scheduled programs with updates on the weather. 

"I have to do cut-ins to warn people," Heady said. "I wouldn't want to cut in on an NCAA basketball tournament or 'American Idol', and people ask why I can't just cut in on commercials. Well, I cover two stations, FOX and CBS, and both stations may not be having commercials at the same exact time." 

He said that on May 4, 2003, he had to keep track of three storms across the station's viewing area, which spans 25 to 30 counties. That area included Carl Junction, Mo., where he lived. 

"All the time I was on the air, I was wondering if my own house was still standing," Heady said. "Half my roof was gone, the siding was pulled from the house, and all the windows were broken. My mail box was also gone, and I got a late fee on my Discover Card because evidently the bill had been in the mail box." 

Geoff Cornish, KOAM-TV meteorologist, discussed storm safety and some common myths about severe weather. 

"One myth is that a highway underpass is a good place to go if you're in a vehicle and a tornado is coming," he said. "That's a myth. It's extremely dangerous to go to an underpass in a tornado, and the wind can actually move faster through that narrow passage." 

The best thing to do, Cornish said, is to get out of the car and lay down in the nearest ditch. "Tornadoes can turn cars into a small ball of metal, and there's no way you can survive that," he said. 

The safest place in the house, in the event of a tornado, is the basement. 

"Many people believe that the southwest corner is the safest, but that's a myth, too. It doesn't matter which corner you go into." 

If there's no basement, the next safest place is a small interior room, such as a closet or bathroom, on the lowest level of the house. 

Crawford County Sheriff Sandy Horton has vivid memories of May 4, 2003. 

"I was southwest of Franklin when I saw the tornado," he said. "I'd seen four tornadoes, but none that massive. I knew whatever it hit would be destroyed." 

After the tornado, Undersheriff Dan Peak was stationed over in Ringo, another area hard hit by the storm, while Horton remained in Franklin. 

"The mobile command post was the trunk of my car, which was parked right out in front of where this center is now," the sheriff said. "All the street signs were gone, and the volunteers coming in didn't know where anything was." 

Later, Horton said, he called for an "all silent," and stationed people up and down the road to listen. 

"If there were any injured people out there moaning, we needed to hear them," Horton said. "It was so still. That feeling will never leave me. It's something I think about every day." 

Additional speakers were storm chasers Ketcham and Tyler Costantini, Lloyd Arnold of FEMA, Doug Cramer, National Weather Service meteorologist, Sherry Weir, National Weather Service Skywarn coordinator, and Randy Snider of USDA Rural Development, the department which helped with funding for several of Franklin's recovery projects. 

The symposium concluded with a remembrance ceremony at 5:11 p.m., the time at which the tornado struck the community. 

"We need to remember the past - it spurs us on and keeps us focused," said Craig Stokes, Franklin Community Council, Inc., president. "We see a bright future for Franklin and for all of Crawford County. This community is blessed with many treasures."

I have been expecting it to... and it finally did I def got my money's worth out of it. Anyone want to chase with me or Me to chase with them? Monday or Wednesday? It would be awesome if someone had a laptop with a Aircard for internet =) if they ended up going with me.... I dont even know if I am sending this to the right email... MessageCheck out these pictures, a programmer I work with took these as he was passing through Arkansas... he said the tornado was heading right at them, they got under and overpass and the tornado passed across the highway a couple hundred yards in front of them.... he thinks this is the same tornado that hit Earle, Arkansas.

The forcast is looking less and less worth it. I always can chase locally so
if things look good round here I'd love to have company,

They even went right through Girard and I didn't even get to see them!! One 
of my friends called me and was like "Dude, you know those storm chasers on 
TV?" I told him yea..."Well, I got to talk to them and shake their hands, 
they even showed me around their TIV and DOW..." AND HE DIDN'T EVEN CALL 
ME!! Grr... What are friends for... I just thought it was kinda cool they 
went through here....

It's hard to say what it will do towards SGF,, I do think we will see 
severe wx well north of the MDT risk, Maybe a tornado or two from Tulsa 
to Springfield,, I-44

I am out this weekend :-(.   I have my youngun's this weekend.   My chase target would be somewhere along I-40 between Ft. Smith and Hot Springs.  Or possibly   US 71 between Ft. Smith and Fayetteville.  Hope everybody out there is safe and gets some good video.

Well I think I'm going to intially target eastern Oklahoma in hopes of
getting in on the dryline at initiation. Thinking I-40 between Ft. Smith and
Checotah, OK. Hope to see some of yall out there tomorrow.

Tomorrow is really shaping up nicely! I agree that the warm front is the 
best target weather wise, But it's going to be in some of the worst 
terrain! NAM is showing the triple point near Tulsa at 0z I'm really 
thinking of playing E OK just to try and stay out of the mountains! Also 
if this dryline is really sticking its nose out! We may end up on it!

These multi target chase days are fun!!! :)

Interesting, you can't ignore the QPF bullseye which rides up I-44 between
7am-7pm on Saturday.

On the other hand, the juxtaposition of the instability axis and insane
helicity is equally hard to ignore in SW to central AR.

I finally got my ATT Sierra 881 card tested on the site you recommended.  I
did the test inside my house with no external antenna (showed four out of
five bars).

The results are as follows:

Download = 159 kbps

Upload = 56 kbps

What a day yesterday was. I started south like my original plan. Got down to
Ft. Smith in time to chase a pretty disorganized severe warned cell. After
getting stuck in traffic in Ft. Smith I decided to reevaluate. The warm
front was not playing out the way I wanted so I decided to chance heading
back towards southwest Mo. Got back to Joplin just as the tornado warning
hit for Jasper and Newton. Not wanting to sit at 71 and 44 I opted to head
south a bit. Seemed that the storm kept extending southward or that it was
making a right turn. Not really sure which. Set up at Iris Rd just east of
71 barely in time to catch what appeared a wall cloud with heavy rain to my
west. Then caught a glimpse of a rope funnel in the rain shaft. Looking at
the maps it would have been in the Racine area. I then made an attempt to
turn back south on Gateway in time to get hit with baseball size hail.
Pulled off into a parking lot that had a few of those metal carports for
sale to wait out the hail. I was worried about the location of the tornado
since I had lost track of that part of the storm due to the heavy rain.
Right after the hail stopped we took off south on Gateway to see debris in
the air and again caught a brief glimpse of the tornado as it headed east or
east south east. Unfortunately that's where my chase ended as I couldn't get
back on the storm due to all the trees and buildings in the road. We were
about a half mile north of the tornado during the hail. Pretty scary when I
think about that.
I had a request from a friend who works at Barry Lawrence Ambulance to help
in Purdy. Ended up spending a couple of hours there while search and rescue
was underway.

Well, we had full intention of heading into central AR Saturday.  We got as
far as Harrison when we decided it may not be necessary to go that far. We
ended up west on 166 in SE KS and stopped in Chetopa.  At that time there
were two cells, the northern most was certainly the best developed so we
went north to Oswego to check it out.  We figured there would be more than
enough time to shoot east and head south if the southern storm were to
develop. Well, we tried but the forward speed of the storms coupled with
trying to head east through a place called Joplin make this impossible.  We
ended up driving through hail and rain for about 45 minutes straight!  Never
saw a thing even though we basically paralleled the storm into Missouri.  A
maddening ending to what was some pretty good course adjustments and
nowcasting throughout the day.  In the end, it came down to two storms and
we picked the wrong one.  Such is chasing!

 

Great shots Joey and the NWS link was fascinating.

 

FYI, the Ozarks (out viewing area actually) have now seen 53 tornadoes this
year, killing 8.

Looks like the US 71 corridor will be the zone of interest in our region.   Especially between Nevada and Joplin.  It looks like initiation could be as early as 2-3pm, but more than likely after 4pm.   Tornado Watches will probably go up by mid-afternoon for the 4 states area once again.

This is a message from Geoff Cornish of KOAM-TV that I wanted to pass along:

A storm spotter / volunteer firefighter from the Seneca, MO Rural Fire Protection District has died today as a result of injuries from Saturday's EF4 tornado in western Newton County, MO. Tyler Casey was spotting at Highway 43 and Iris Road in western Newton County, and his vehicle was tossed by the winds. He was pulled from the vehicle and was on life support until this (Monday) morning.

This was a Line-Of-Duty-Death in the fire service, as his firefighting responsibilites with Rural Seneca Fire led him - and others - out spotting.

Tyler is survived by a two year old daughter.

I spoke with his fire training instructor around midday, and he said that Tyler was a tremendous firefighter -- one of the best, most 'up and coming' young guys in Newton County. His instructor said that Tyler was one who always put others first.

As meteorologists -- we know how much we rely on the information spotters give us. He was helping the public at large when he sustained those injuries.

This storm had something that most spring storms don't; almost due west
winds at 500 mb.  This means that deviant right movers certainly can move
south of east.  Also, south winds are as good as SSE or SE when assessing
backing surface winds.

I sort of collect PPT's and I didn't have this one, thanks!

I spotted this on stormtrack,, I know I use the terms incorrectly all of

Backing winds are indicative of cold air advection which would be 
sinking air. Wouldn't this be the opposite of what you would want in 
tornado genesis. I would assume warm air advection (veering winds) would 
be more ideal for proper vertical lift.

Also in forecasts I'll see people claim certain winds are veering, yet 
when I look at them, they are technically backing. If the 850mb is 
southwesterly, the 700mb a little more southwesterly, and the 500 is 
westerly it would be backing technically right? I've seen a lot of

The important differentiation is the phrase "with height".  What was listed
on Stormtrack are the general principles of warm/cold air advection and the
thermal wind.

The eastern side of a classic trough/surface low is a "veered with height"
environment. However, at any individual level, backing is a turning of the
wind rose counterclockwise.  So winds which back locally at the surface
actually contribute to a "veering with height profile".

I would say that almost all references to what the low level winds are doing
are attempts to describe positive or negative effects on the hodograph and
helicity.

i think the best way to look at it is whether you are
going from the surface up, or from high in the
atmosphere down to the surface. basically if you want
a better chance at tornadogenesis you would want
backing winds on the way down to the surface. for
example west winds at 500, sw at 700, southerly at
850, and southeast or even easterly at the surface. so
you can see the winds are turning counter clockwise
towards the surface which is what you want since a
tornado normally turns counterclockwise and is a
surface based weather event. even a little bit of a
turn of the surface wind from south to south south
east greatly increases the storm relative helicity and
the chance at tornadoes. also often you'll hear people
say they want the 850 winds to back as well bc
sometimes they will be a southwesterly or even almost
westerly, so you can often get dry air entrained into
the storm, plus the levels above it will often have
similar direction winds so you dont get enough turning
with height at the lowest 1-2 km. hope that helps!
btw, i'm up here in nebraska waiting for our severe
season to start!! its getting ridiculous. i looked at
the 4-8 day spc outlook yesterday, and everyday that
had a chance of severe weather was along the gulf
states and today was up to southern/eastern kansas.
totally a late feb/ march weather pattern. i guess
that shouldn't surprise me since we have had below
norm temps for the last 7 months in a row, but come
on!!

i left my new canon rebel Xsi with sigma 17 70 lens in golden city missouri and the sheriff's office is acting uninterested in going to get it even though i know exactly where it is.........i had the old xt out with the 10 20 lens and that one out .......gust front came, forgot about it till i got home.  

I saved a year for that camera......gonna go jump off a cliff.......

OUR CHASE DAY WAS ONE OF MIXED EMOTIONS.  DAVID TONER, RYAN SELL AND I ALL LEFT SPRINGFIELD AROUND 1:30.  OUR INITIAL TARGET WAS GOING TO BE PARSONS KS, BUT WHEN THEY ISSUED THE TORNADO WATCH FOR EASTERN OKLAHOMA WE THOUGHT WE WOULD HEAD SOUTH ON 69 HWY TO ADAIR.   ON THE WAY WE GOT OFF THE BEATEN PATH AS ONE OF MY PHOTOS WILL SHOW.   ANYWAYS ... ABOUT 4:30 WE DECIDED TO HEAD NORTH TOWARD OUR ORIGINAL TARGET.  WE HEARD THEY PUT OUT A SEVERE TH. STORM WARNING FOR THE PARSONS AREA.  SO WE THOUGHT JUST MAYBE THINGS WERE GOING TO CHANGE.  THEY HAD ALSO ISSUED A TORNADO WATCH FOR THE AREA UNTIL 11PM.   JUST ABOUT THE TIME WE ARRIVED IN CHETOPA KS THEY (NWS) CANCELLED THE WARNING.  OH WELL. THE STRUCTURE DIDN'T LOOK ALL THAT BAD TO OUR NW AND WE COULD SEE SOME TOWERS TO OUR WEST.  WE DECIDED TO HEAD NORTH UP TO US-400.   WE STOPPED AT US 400 AND HWY 2 AND TOOK SOME SHOTS. THERE LOOKED LIKE A WALL CLOUD TRYING TO FORM OFF TO THE NORTHWEST.  AFTER A LITTLE WHILE WE DECIDED
