If you haven't heard, it is with great sadness to report that fellow storm chaser Eric Nguyen passed away early Sunday morning.

Eric was an inspiration to many storm chasers and was a mentor to many newcomers as well. I was always inspired by Eric's talent as a photographer dreaming to one day be able to achieve the beauty of a supercell, tornado, or just a scenic shot in general in a still photograph the way Eric did. I never got to meet Eric in person, but have talked to him several times over the internet. On May 29th, 2004 I passed by him as he sat at the side of the road watching an a spectacular supercell that went on to produce numerous tornadoes that day, unfortunately I did not have a chance to stop and talk to him. Needless to say, to hear of his death came as a shock to me as well as to everyone else in the chase community who knew Eric.

My prayers to Eric's family and friends and to all those who knew him as a storm chaser.

I am very sorry to hear that.  I had to break the news
to a co-worker/friend at work, who was a good friend
of Eric's, and who went to school with him at OU.  It
came to a shock to him as well.

Humberto came very close to this CMAN station check out the cool graph..


This is a very historic tropical system. I don't know for sure but I think
it may be the first storm to go from a depression to a hurricane all within
range of WSR-88D.. Further more it one of the fastest hurricanes to develop
from a 15kt depression to a 75knt hurricane in less then 24 hours.

I sort of dismissed this storm as just another run of
the mill TD/TS, but, obviously I should have waited a
few more hours.  Very impressive.  I've had a few days
off of work, so, I was trying not to think about the
weather, but, goes to show you, you never know what's
going to happen, even with all of the technology
today.

SPC has a slight risk for most of the central KS, almost all of IA, and 
SE NE See images.

(7:30PM) MDT, 18:30 (6:30PM) PDT, or 13:30 UTC

be enough surface heating,

I'm going to watch the vis sat closely as soon as the sun comes up here 
and see if their are any large holes in the clould deck forming if so 
the chase may still be on into S KS.

There is a freeware called IWMAP that some of you might like, from the site:

WMAP is an interactive program which provides the user with a large array of internet data useful in making short-term (0-6 hour) forecasts of convective weather phenomena. IWMAP's key feature is the ability to display and manipulate the current 0HR RUC forecast wind profile. The hodograph which is produced utilizes the Bunkers ID method for forecasting storm-motion, which has been shown to be a superior way of determining supercell storm motion. Parameters such as storm-relative helicity as well as vector shear magnitudes are then computed and displayed next to the hodograph. RUC thermodynamic parameters are also ingested into the program and displayed as well. The value of IWMAP lies in the fact that the user can adjust the wind profile based on the observations a forecaster makes for their area of interest. The CAPE, LCL height, and CIN can be adjusted as well, resulting in more accurate composite parameters utilized in determining supercell and tornado potential for a particular region.

An additional feature of IWMAP is the ability to display internet data within the browser window, while at the same time keeping the shear and thermodynamic parameters visible to the side. This allows the user to view a multitude of weather graphics quickly, which will aid in determining convective initiation, storm type, and severe weather potential. The interactive functionality of IWMAP makes it a unique tool in the severe weather forecasters arsenal, and will prove to be a more efficient way in diagnosing and visualizing the current severe weather environment using internet data.

I think I'm going to head straight North into SE NE tomorrow... that 
looks like the best spot... Jay lets meet up in KC or so and go north if 
you are going to go.. it really looks good in the SE corner of NE 
tomorrow. as always I'm going to look at the Day 1...

I plan on getting up early and heading out as early a i can.. let me 
know if anyone wants a ride.

Guys,

I'm sorry that I missed the conference call, I was
busy getting ready for a camping trip that'll I'll be
on for the next 4 days.  Anyway, severe wx parameters
look decent for NE KS/ SE NB tomorrow, a good surface
low/trough will move into that area by 21-00Z, and is
forecast at 1008 mb by the NAM at ncar.   Also, the
jet stream winds at 300mb look to be at near 100 knots
over that area by this time as well.  500mb vort is
weak, but, hopefully shear/helicity approaching from
the west will be enough to overcome that.  Cape looks
descent enough with ETA showing highest values btwn
2500/3000 J/KG.  Also there will be a frontal boundary
crossing through NW to Central Kansas by 1800Z, and
should be near NE KS/SE NB by 00Z.  Good luck chasing!

Im not so sure with the new day1 and the model data it looks worth it..  
but a may wait and see... i would like to see something a bit more to 
chase 300-500 miles..

I allowed that e-mail so you can send from it.. if their are anymore 
e-mails you would like on the receive list let me know.. you wont get

It appears the hot spot for Saturday will be extreem NW Kansas, NE Colorado 
up into SW Neb. Not sure I would want to travel that far unless the tornado 
threat was greater. Sunday looks to be a better day and closer to home, NE 
Kansas into SE Nebraska. I'll look a little more when I get home later.

One thing that could be and issue is the lack of cape according to WRF 
their is very little CAPE, but the GFS shows plenty of CAPE in E KS.

Lets have a look tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday to see whats really up..

Ok, back from my camping trip, those hodo's that you
sent were awesome, I'll be working tomorrow, so I'll
check out the latest model data in the morning for
Sunday's outlook, and then again from work, and I'll
e-mail the group if I see anything worth mentioning,
but, we just had a week cold front/sfc trough go
through NorCal, causing some drizzle and cloudy skies
today, so, definitely looks like the door is opening
up a bit.

Tyler and I were discussing the timing of initiation
for tomorrow, here is the latest DAY 1 before I
clocked out of work, pretty much everything that we
were discussing during our IM.

hold true to this as well, I think it will, with that
deepening upper level trough over the rockies, and
that low developing and frontogenesis over the Plains.
