I think this has something to do with WiMax, Sprint
and Version has been doing something like that.  I
have a friend in KC that works for Sprint I will send
him a e-mail and ask.  From what I remember him
telling me about it was Wifi that would work 30 plus
miles from the cell tower.

I remember hearing about WiMax last year, but never
heard much more about it.  It's just a matter of time
before something happens to change how internet is
received on the road.  With that being said I have had
absolutely no problems connecting with my Cingular
card this year.  So I am happy with my mobile internet
at the moment.  It will be interesting over the next
few years to see what new stuff comes out in regards
to mobile internet.  I can't help but changes for the
better are in the not so distant future.

web cam images, watches, a warning server, custom spotter network data, 
updated repeater lists a tornadonerds members homes placefile showing 
your house so you will know if the tornado will miss you or not...

I have successfully setup and ran the WRF Environmental Modeling 
System.. That means I can now run custom model data for our chases at 
ANY resolution 10km 40km 1km...

If anybody that is new to the placefiles has problems
with getting the placefiles to work in GRLevel 3 let
me know.  All you really do is copy and paste the url
into the manage placefile box under GRLevel 3.  Go to
windows- show placefile manager- click on the little
folder in the upper left hand corner of the placefile
manager box that pops up -copy and paste the url in
the space provided.  Then under the placefile manager
box you can check and uncheck what you want to be
displayed at any given time.

Here is a link to download roads on GRLevel 3. Scroll
to the bottom of the page and click on the state and
go from there.  I haven't downloaded any yet, but I
think they will show county roads etc. in addition to
the more major roads that GRLevel 3 comes with as a
default.

I plan on going as well.  Strange day indeed.  SPC
doesn't have it on their outlook, but people are
talking about it.  Dryline doesn't look as pronounced,
but if a nice boundary/warm front can evolve in nw/nc
Kansas there is plenty of stuff to make storms severe.
 Helcity should be near 300, CAPE near 3,000 or so,

Yeah I would need to ride with someone, my tires are bad on my Expedition
and plus the computer I have in it is currently out of commission since I'm
swapping out some hardware on it with another computer. I can help pay for

Kansas.  We will let you know what we plan to do.  New
model runs should be out in a couple hours and the Day

gpsgate is what I use.  I know Tyler said there was a
free version of something else that does the same
thing, but I have already bought my gpsgate so I am
going to stick with it.  I can split my GPS onto my
GRLevel3, Wx Worx, Street Atlas and Spotter Network. 
Figuring out the com ports and what not can be tricky
at first, esp. if you are like me an not too computer
savy.  If you need help just let me know.

Forecast models still showing a good setup Saturday for NC Kansas and into
Nebraska. 

 

Let me know what the plan is, like I said I can't drive my expedition cause
of 2 bad tires.. so if anyone is going out and can pick me up at whatever

Check out this bend / bow with the dryline surge.  The surface low is 
going to push NE from the Texas Panhandle to around Dodge City on Friday 
that leaves a nice area around the surface low for discrete cells... the 
wind fields are supportive of supercells in that area...

Target: 80 mile arch SW to NW of Pratt, KS  ( < like that..

Target: Plan B anywhere in Western OK from Woodward to Wichita Falls...

Let me know if anyone wants to ride along..

Joey I plan on chasing Friday as well and will more
than likely stay out west to get in position for
Saturday and possibly Sunday instead of driving all
the way back home.  We can work something out though
for Saturday and even Sunday if it looks good.  Maybe
we can meet halfway somewhere.  I may not check email
again as I am going to try and sleep for about 6 hours
or so.  You can call me if you can think of a good way
to arrange things.

Ah dang, probably won't go out Saturday then. I can't drive my Expedition
that much because I have two bad tires on it - actually I already have my
spare on it cause one of the tires went flat and even the spare tire has a
slow leak in it. I'm getting new tires Monday or Tuesday, until then I can't
drive far out of town so meeting even half way wouldn't work.

My dad was able to get my Expedition in today to get the tires fixed, I'm
going to get things set back up in my Expedition tonight.. looks like the

Check out this radar image I just pulled a few minutes ago. This is
Stafford, County Kansas where there have been reports of a very large
tornado on the ground. Looks like Saint John, KS is about to be hit.

Tyler, Joey, Chris and Bart do you guys remember where
we went after Pratt and before Radium?  Did we just
stay with that storm for the most part coming out of
Pratt on Hy 281 north?  I think we went back to the
east and then went back to the north and picked back
up Hwy 50 then went back towards Great Bend on 281. 
My time stamp on my camrea shows that we stopped and
snapped some shots of that cell out of Pratt, just not
sure where at.  LOL  BTW how can I get some video
grads off my tape....I downloaded the video to my
computer, the shots of that tornado I got with my
camrea suck!  Of course everything else turned out
great.

That was one of the things that crossed my mind, if the cell towers are down
in that area then any of those wireless services would be of no use.

I'm not sure who she is, she just sent me that through my site - I haven't
responded back to her yet.

I'm lazy so i'm going to copy&pasted my chase report from my website...wow. what a bittersweet chase for us. me and my buddy randy rhea
basically farted our way west slowly waiting for storms to go up. i
didnt want to wait for the south cells so we just held our ground. it
paid off. we were heading west toward coldwater when we heard the
warning. we only had a weather radio. so we were already scared
shit-less. night chasing with no radar is not a good idea. so we're
about 8 miles east of coldwater flying towards a tor-warned cell. there
was a funnel reported. show time. not even 2 minutes later that funnel
report turned into a large tornado with a small(er) tornado forming
under a new meso. well, that newer "small" tornado grew. at an alarming
rate. as we were turning north onto 183 in coldwater, we could see the
southern area of circulation, and it looked iffy. then we get up onto a
hill, to see a large cone to the west, with a massive wedge on the east
side of the updraft base. massive. we were at least 10 miles away and
it was a beast. as we got closer, the western tornado weakened, but 2
satellite tornadoes were dancing around the wedge. there were at least
4 on the ground at this time, 2 strong ones. my buddy randy hicks was
very close to these tornadoes and saw 6 at once. 2 more satellites on
the northside of the wedge. we followed it north and it only got
bigger. at one point, it looked like it was wrapping up in rain. we
stopped, i got out and took some pictures, and it looked at least 1.5
miles wide. we were more than 5 miles south of it and it takes up the
whole picture. i will post the pictures when im not at work. we
continued to follow it north as it went through greensburg. the roads
were blocked due to significant damage, so we tried to take a county
road around town. bad idea. stuck in the mud. with a new meso trying to
funnel to our west. luckily, we're awesome, so we got unstuck, and got
the hell out of there. then we decided to go home, due to damage
reports and basically knowing we couldnt get to it. we left the
wx-radio on just to hear damage reports. it stayed on the ground for at
least an hour, and a new large tornado formed as the wedge finally
occluded. unfortunately there were 4 confirmed deaths as Greensburg
sustained a direct hit. it looked way more than a mile wide as it hit
the town, but we'll see after the survey. if they can do a survey. with
a HIGH risk placed directly over yesterdays MOD, it could be bad news.
i'm expecting a large outbreak with a couple of long-track, extremely
powerfull tornadoes. my heart and prayers go out to the families
effected by yesterdays outbreak, as well as those that will be effected
by todays even larger outbreak.

We were in Greensburg on the 5th walking through the damage and seemed to have service that while not as reliable as normal was working. We were actually using sprint that I know of that worked. Other carriers might have worked but I can't say for sure.

Jay I am not sure what happened as I always get
confused what sequence stuff happens in.  I do try and
have a location for where I see tornadoes for
reference.  I am also curious how to save video grabs
as I did not get a pic of the tornado north or Seward,
but did get good video.  Also I have a good video of
the wedge that hit Greensburg north of town near
Macksville that will show up really good on a video
grab as it is hard to see between lightning flashes. 
Bart gave me some really good video editing software
that I will try and use in the next week or so during
some down time.

Does anyone want to make trip to check out a hurricane this year? If one 
heads for the gulf coast the drive wouldn't really be too bad... It's 
going to be allot different then a tornado chase... For one we will end 
up living in the car if we can't find a place to stay. Things are going 
to be allot slower and we have to try not and float away other then that 
I bet its about the same.. But it sounds like fun something to try once....

Well I should have done Rita with Gribble, but my wife
was not to sure about it.   If one comes close to the
gulf like around Houston I do have family there so we
could have a place to go and or stay and I have talked
about this with Jim Reed on the how to's.  Yes I would
like to chase/checkout a hurricane.  There is alot of
prep involved to do a hurricane, but I think it could
be done.

Hehe, to say they put out A mayday would be an understatement. I think it went out on just about everything we could find. Sadly, by the time we realized we were in real danger and it became a 'mayday' situation it was really too late because no one else was willing to drive into the path and rescue us/pull the vehicle out.

Long range models show a disturbance developing in
Kansas/Nebraska area.  Hopefully, the trough out west
that is progged for the 21/22 or so digs in a bit
deeper, but, not looking like it will.  Looks like I
will have to chase rogue storms, so if anyone is
interested in taking me along, I will help with
expenses.  I also have a good lap top, and will be
getting a mobile card for that week, May 17-23, so, I
am willing to chase all the way up to the mid-west
area, which looks like I may have to do if thngs don't
change.  I will also buy an noaa radio, maps, but
that's about it, as its my first time out there.

Well I'd be interested depending on the exact timeline and everything. Gerard (KI4LJT) is moving back home to South Carolina, he stated that if one heads out that way he'd be more than willing to host chasers.

Same here as well, but just depends on when and what my financial situation
is like at the time.. but I've always wanted to experience a hurricane at

I emailed Lorenzo, the owner of the company that makes the Inspeed
anemometer about the cups breaking off.. this was his reply. Hopefully the
new mold/cups he speaks of will prevent the cups from breaking off.

the mold and stiffen up the joint between the cup and the hubs
the improved rotors should be available in a couple of weeks

helps
