Agree with the problem the CAP may present, but it seems likely to erode, esp. just east/northeast of the low/triple point by at least 00z according to the models so that is good. Agree with the huge CAPE/Dewpoints that are being projected as almost unreal. With the models agreeing somewhat it is encouraging. At this point at least we are pretty sure that the trough will verify. Now it's just a matter of where the best stuff sets up like the surface lows/drylines/warm fronts. Yeah the 7th is a little harder to judge and will be easier when it shows up on the NAM. The 6th looks like a north central NE/south central SD play according to the models now, but that will surely change a little bit at least. I just installed it on my laptop about 10 minutes ago, got my GPS reciever connected and have it set to the right com port in the settings and when I hit "connect" it shows connected, but it won't update anything. The current location stays at .0000/.0000 and doesn't show any sort of other data as if it's not recieving any data from the GPS. It works fine when I open up Microsoft Streets & Trips, it detects the GPS on Com4 and shows my location - but just not in Spotter Network. I have it set to active, I have my spotter ID in the field. I put the GPS on COM3 even and changed the setting to it, again it shows connected but doesn't detect any data and doesn't display my latitude/longitude. Has anyone else seen this happen? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ _______________________________________________ F5 mailing list F5 at tornadonerds.com http://lists.tornadonerds.com/mailman/listinfo/f5 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Shortly after these photos were taken, a storm to my southeast cut off the inflow to this storm, thus weakening the storm. Tornadoes give these guys a thrill BY KATIE STOCKSTILL THE MORNING SUN For Tyler Costantini and Joey Ketcham, the tornado sirens are not a warning to take shelter, they are a signal that they have found what they were looking for. Over the past 11 years, Costantini and Ketcham have chased and witnessed dozens of large storms and deadly tornadoes. The duo tracks and documents severe weather in Kansas and elsewhere the Midwest and have grown to love the risk and excitement that only storm chasing can provide. Ketcham said that they would travel far and wide, within reason, to track a storm, but try to ensure that the show will be worth their gas money before they set-out. "We've gotten pretty good at looking at the forecasts and predicting what will happen," Costantini said. "We're still wrong about 50 percent of the time. It all just comes down to luck and being in the right spot at the right time." Once the teams finds a storm or tornado, they begin to communicate with other spotters to identify the location and direction of the storm. They also contact the National Weather Service to alert them of the severity and motion of the storm. "Their radar will only go so far," Ketcham said. "We try to report all our findings to them so that they can better inform and warn people in the path of the storm." The team uses a variety of technology to help pinpoint the location of the storm and to relay information to others. Ketcham said a new program called the Spotter Network allows storm spotters to log on to the Internet and communicate with one another. If they happen to see a tornado or major cloud formation, Ketcham said they always try to get a photo or video to document their trip. "The photos and video can go a long way," Ketcham said. "They are nice to have, and that way, we can look back and see everything we have experienced." The photos can even help remind the guys of the dangerous situations that they have put themselves in, all for the thrill of catching the storm. "May 29, 2004, was a high risk day," Costantini said. "We went to Freeport, Kan., and got to see six or seven tornadoes in one day. That was one of the best chases I've been on. That day will always stick out in my mind." Both chasers will admit that the sport of storm chasing has changed over the past decade as technology and radar have improved, but the rush and thrill they get from seeing Mother Nature's wrath keeps them on the road and in the chase. "I will hopefully keep with this until I'm not physically able to do it," Costantini said. "It gets expensive, and it can be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing, but it's in my blood." According to NAM output on wxcaster.com it looks like CAPE is projected to be around 7,000 J/kg with fairly nice helicity levels as well. SPC mentions tornadoes in the Day 2 outlook as a southward moving cold front and associated outflow boundaries from an early morning MCS could provide a pretty good shot at supercells. The CAP doesn't look too strong and should at least yield isolated development until evening. ML CAPE is forecasted to be near or just above 4,000 J/kg as well. Dewpoints are projected to be in the upper 60's or near 70 with forecasted temps in the mid 80's range yield manageable lcl heights. I can't leave until 7am, but this should give enough time to make a target area as Tyler and I made it to SD last September in pretty good time, esp. from KC north along I-29. This may be one more good chase before things heat up for good as we head towards July. If anybody is interested let me know. I plan on leaving by 7am to allow plenty of time to adjust. General target area now of east central NE or northeast NE, which I hope doesn't shift too far west or north to allow time to make a decent target area.
