test later this month?  Just curious because if you
are I need to get that book to you to help you study
as it makes it much easier.  I finally got my call
sign.  It is KE5NML.  I still need to get my radio
installed and everything.  Knowing me it wont get done
til summer.  Anyway let me know if you are still
planning on taking it this month and I will get that
study book to you.

I highly recommend doing the practice tests at QRZ.com.

My daughter passed her Tech exam last year at 9 years old.  If you take
these tests and consistenly hit 90% over and over, you'll pass with flying
colors.

Yeah that would be a good idea.  I don't have a
weekend off for about a month so will you be available
sometime during the week if I came over around 9 or so
in the morning?  Tuesday next week would be great.  I
am off Monday and Tuesday next week, but I have to
teach a class Monday til noon on top of working the
night before so that day is shot.  Let me know what is
best for you and what I need.  I think I have
everything except for some powerpoles and some extra
cables for my inverters that have powerpole adapters
so I can run an inverter to my car battery if need be.

Thanks for the link Jeff.  I had the test pool booklet
and just kept going over and over the questions until
I knew them really really good.  I read the first half
of a book I had and learned some really good stuff,
but then it got really over my head technical and I
said the heck with this.  I passed with no problem by
doing the booklet with the question pool.  The good
thing is I still learned a lot from just going over
the test pool.  I will learn the rest on my own with
trial and error and actually transmitting over air.  I
know the FCC rules really good so I think I have
pretty goood confidence that I know enough to at least
get started and learn the rest as I go.

I have been watching this for a few days now, but now
that it is closer it bears watching for sure.  I have
to work, but can arrange to be off if need be, esp. if
it looks really good.  I will check models tonight and
see what I notice.  It is on the 4-8 day outlook.  Day
3 should be out just after midnight Wednesday.  Also
the next day the 22nd may be good as well, but closer
to home.

Saturday doesn't look to shabby.. brief look at the GFS while my internet is
alive..

 

Most seem to think moisture will be a problem, that is not enough of it. In
my opinion moisture is fine. we are look at 50 dewpoints across Kansas and
even higher down into Oklahoma and Texas. If dewpoints got much higher that

Still looks pretty good.  I'm not going to go into
details since the next model runs will be out in about
5 hours and I will post something then.  Some people
are worried about moisture, but I think it will be
fine.  If I remember right the March 28th outbreak
wasn't really great moisture wise with upper 50's in
Nebraska and parts of Kansas where wedge tornadoes
were seen.  It will be interesting to keep an eye on
metar stations over the next few days to actually
judge what moisture is like.

Forgot to add a couple things.  Dewpoints are
currently low 50's to even some mid 50's in the
eastern half of the Texas panhandle.  Southwest Kansas
and the Oklahoma panhandle are mid 40's about.  The
GFS does show 55-60 dews along the dryline in nw
Kansas to nw Texas.  The thing I like is the the very
sharp dryline that is forecasted, which may help
overcome dewpoints if they do become to be an issue to
a certain extent.  NW Oklahoma shows 55-60 dews.
dropping off to around 25 just west of the dryline
about 50 miles or so.

Hey do you guys all have passports? if not you should think about 
getting one for summer chases in Canada.. I was just thinking about late 
season LP Supercells that happen up there i would really like to see 
that sometime.. its really not a bad drive compared to where we go most 
of the time... And it would be a new challenge.. different radar, 
mounted police, data cards may not work and so forth..

We should think about this when we are suffering from boring ass July 
and August... heh.

Not sure how many heard, veteran chaser Amos Magliocco and Eric Nguyen were
in Tulia, Texas on Saturday when the tornado that did extensive damage to
the town dropped down about 100 yards from them. They managed to get behind
an old building which collapsed on them as the tornado passed over them, a
tractor trailer also was tipped over onto the driver side of their vehicle.

 

Both Eric and Amos amazingly came out just fine. The picture below was on
the Sky News website which shows Amos and Eric's chasemobile after their
encounter.

Hey Tyler,

I know it's still three weeks out, but I am now
preparing for my trip to Dallas.  I will be out there
for 7 days, 6 days to chase, 1 day to be back to
Dallas for my departure back to San Jose.  So, I hope
you will still be interested in chasing the week of
May 17 - May 23, if we get some good setups of course.
 Any suggestions on what I should bring would
be appreciated.  I plan to bring a laptop and some
good maps of the area with me, and money to help with
gas/lodging, but that is about it.  Thanks again.

I have been reading all the posts about using Sprint, Cingular, Verizon,
etc.. data cards for high speed internet connections. It seems the card srun
about $200-$250 and unlimited data plans are anywhere from $40 up to $80 and
you have to sign at least a 1 year and most of the time a 2 year contract
and the card only uses that company's towers am I right??

Well my chase partner found this new "gadget" that Avis is putting in all
its cars that promises wi-fi anywhere you go. It uses any and all available
cell towers no matter what company it belongs to and has a 95% coverage rate
for the US (so they say). The cost of the "gadget" is $399 and then its $50
a month for unlimited data. It plugs into the cigarrette lighter and then
becomes a wi-fi hotspot able to connect multiple devices so I guess anybody
in the car can use it at the same time. It is suppose to have a range of
100ft so unles you secure it I guess anybody pulling up next to you could
use it also. High speed access ranges from 600Kbps-800Kbps. Upload speeds
about 200Kbps.

My teammate (Phil) loves trying new toys and has already pre-ordered it and
we will be testing it out during our chase vacation in both vehicles and I
will let you know how well it works. he also has a Sprint card as backup but
this seems cheaper per month and should have better coverage so if it works
then we will be dumping the Sprint card and if it is as good as advertised
then I will be able to run Gr3 and wont need WxWorx either. Should pay for
itself in a few months. It isnt available to the public until May sometime.

I was just going to post the same thing.  I bookmarked
the link.  Will be interesting to see how it works out
for them.  For only $50 a month that would be nice. 
There is another chaser party that I will probably be

Thats not any different then having a cingular or sprint card.... its 
just a router that connects to ans EVDO network so you dont have to use 
a card..

If a 2 year contract wasn't required I would rather go this route, plus
$50/mo beats the $80/mo that Cingular charges. Essentially they all do the
same thing, but price wise for monthly service this could be the way to
go...
